do’s & don’ts of video

Audio

Do’s:

  • Use an external microphone that connects to your camera or smartphone. A lavalier (clip-on) microphone or a shotgun microphone can significantly improve audio quality.

Don’ts:

  • Allow background noise. Find a quiet location to shoot or record, away from noisy appliances, traffic, or crowds. If background noise is unavoidable, try to use noise reduction or suppression tools during editing to improve clarity.

lighting

Do’s:

  • Embrace Natural light. Windows are your best friend.
  • Use white walls to brighten your scene. They’re like nature’s bounce cards!
  • Use front face lighting. If you need more light, back lighting adds even better quality.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid filming in dark settings. This will make your video grainy and hard to see.

horizontal vs. vertical video

Do’s:

  • Use horizontal for MLS photos
  • Use vertical for reels

where to look

Do’s:

  • Look directly at the camera. Consistent eye contact helps build trust and connection with your audience.

Don’ts:

  • Look off to the side UNLESS you’re the subject of an interview-style video.

choose your fit

Do’s:

  • Wear solid, non-distracting colors like blues, greys, earth tones and pastels. They look great on camera and won’t steal the spotlight.
  • Keep accessories simple to avoid distractions. A subtle necklace or pair of earrings is fine but avoid overly shiny or noisy jewelry.

Don’ts:

  • Wear patterns and overly bright colors.
